You know you're good parents when...

...you supply your daughter with almost half the money for her new laptop, even though your own computer is on its last legs.

For Christmas Taylor received $280 in Best But gift cards from her dad and his family and my mum and brother each gave her $100. She was supposed to save the $100 she earned babystitting on New Years Eve. She didn't of course, she went skiing a couple of times and to the store and the mall and had a grand total of $10 left. Which now that I think about it, was probably from babysitting last Friday evening. I still owed her $150 from her honours report card so all told she had $640.

The laptop she wanted was on sale for $699.95, $200 off. Of course, they didn't have it. She looked at a few others, all higher in price. The guy was trying to convince her to get one that was $899 and I was saying "No way, she hasn't saved nearly enough." And anyway, what 12 year old needs a computer with everything? Not mine.

We found another one for $699, and she went with that. And then we added the 2 year warranty for $180. With the recyling fee (only $5- I thought it was $25) and the GST we ended up spending almost $930. I told her she would be babysitting for a long time to pay off the $290 we lent her.

She set it all up tonight. She was supposed to configure it, but who listens to their mother? She created accounts for everyone, though I am not sure she will actually let any of us use it. She and Liam had a game of Scrabble and at bedtime were playing Wheel of Fortune. Tomorrow we are going to get her a wireless router so she can actually have internet access. Because quite frankly, I am not sure what people did with computers before the advent of the world wide web. I know I had no use for them. Hmmm...maybe we should have asked for a router for free instead of a laptop bag. That would have been smart.

You are the best of moms. I had to laugh when I read this and I'll let you into a secret, helping out doesn't stop when they leave home, or when they have their own families~ it's what we mums do best!

You are a nice Mum I'm sure Taylor's very very happy! I had to laugh at ChrisB's comment as my Mum is going halves with me on a new camera :)
I have no idea what people did with computers before the web came along!

Lucky girl! Life sure has changed for these little turkeys from when we were kids. Tell me, how great was it to see her beyond excited?

ChrisB is right! This is just the beginning and now that you've done this for Taylor, just think of S&S in a few years...lol.

It's a slippery slope!

You are way nicer than me, Dillon will only get a laptop if he works and passes his exams in the summer. After the parent teacher meetings I attended yesterday it looks like my money is safe!!!

While I admit that mum is great at helping out sometimes the adult children can and do repay with treats of their own.

I guess I'm not so good :( We usually pass my old ones on to one of the kids but I usually upgrade every year. This year I gave my old one to my dad.

I am with Lisa, and we don't get new ones often, so the kids are sheer out of luck. Taylor is one lucky kid.

Izzak got a laptop this year through the homeschool program but it's his to keep. He loves it and has all the wireless internet. We started with a cord sometimes but since he had a wireless card we just got the router and actually all the computers in the house are on wireless internet. I love it because now I have less wires to trip over.
