I don't know how Taylor did it, but sometime ago she managed to link her MSN account to Outlook Express and now whenever I open my email, up in the corner pops up "You have 12 new messages!" or whatever. I usually turn it off but sometimes am not paying attention and it gets overlooked. In which case I suddenly find myself engaged in conversation with children who have a fantastic vocabulary that seems only to include the opening line of "who dis".
This comes from one particular girl in Taylor's class, a child she is not friends with, and usually I just turn it off. Sick of constantly seeing "who dis" yesterday I replied with "If you don't know how it is, why don't you just delete it?" There was no answer.
What do these kids do? Pass a list around the class saying who has hotmail, add your address to my list (but leave out your actual name) and I'll send you the same forwarded email you have already received 9 times and then I'll message you asking who you are? They must. And the names they use!
Here's a few choice one from Taylor's list: (yes, I realize I am interfering with the privacy my daughter is entitled to)
-Treauring Christ (if you're that religious at 10, I am slightly more than concerned)
-PIGGYSROCK
-Who ya callin nerd
-Head MUSLEM
-im goin to the waterpark tomorrow with my friends becca, mylene and jan. ohh yeah its going to be awsome (spelling error hers)
-zacks a retard who coppies people 24/7...vote for me (spelling mistake his, Zack is a long time friend of Taylor's and has recently started getting teased and I'm pretty sure Zack has this same kid on his MSN and is seeing that he is being made fun of in cyber space)
Some of these kids are as mean via email and messenger as they are in person, and although Taylor is not being bothered by them it could happen at any moment. She doesn't even chat with half these kids so I am not sure why she keeps them on her list. She's not allowed into the actual chat rooms and has not shown any interest in them yet. I suppose that will all come in a year or two, and they will be having a talk ourselves about chatting with strangers online.
Yikes. My mother must be so glad there was no world wide web when I was a kid.

You are a brave woman to be raising a child in these times...

I think in Tools, Options in Outlook Express there's a check box to "Start messenger when starting outlook express".
Better option:
www.getthunderbird.com :)
I'm so frightened of having to "street proof" my kid/s from cyberspace. And I didn't know kids where being "cyber-bullied" like poor Zack. Oy.. this parenting thing isn't so easy after all.
Next time I do a link, Jo, I will include yourself. I usually linked to you via UI and now that he's banished you I'll have to do it myself!
Mark, thanks for the info, I'll give it a go.
Alissa, what is happening to Zack is nothing compared to the stories I hear on the news. Kids have killed themselves over it.
I am on chatstep, I find it the best one for getting unda age to show tits or p---y, love to meet her in a chat room I will show her my c--k or wank for her if she likes
