Totally stole this off of Rachel.
Ah, Edmonton, home to a million people (if you count surrounding communities), Gateway to the North, City of Champions, 2007 Culture Capital of Canada, Festival City, blah, blah, blah.
I have lived here for: 30 years, since I was 3.
I live here because: I don't like change? Oh, and it's generally a great place to raise kids. And the school systems aren't bad for kids with learning disabilities.
My neighbourhood: Bel.me@d, just west of the mall.
My favourite restaurant: Moxies, cause I'm a cheapie. However, if my brother is paying then the Hardware Grill.
If you go be sure to order: at Moxies, the Kitsilano chicken sandwich. Grilled asparagus, yum! Hardware Grill, the smoked salmon.
My favourite museum: The Royal Alberta Museum and the Telus World of Science.
Favourite tourist destination: Whyte Avenue, home to the Orange Hall, plenty of cafes and some great independent shops. And every August, the Fringe.
Best insider spot: Not so sure it's an "insider" spot, but the legislative grounds have fountains and wading pools that are fantastic for kids on a hot summer day.
My favourite area: I love Fort Edmonton Park. It's not as exciting as when as I was a child, but I still think it's a fun day out.
Best place to go shopping: Why, West Edmonton Mall of course, formerly the largest mall in the world. I think there's a bigger one in Japan now. I have met American tourists who didn't actually leave the mall for an entire week. Like literally didn't even step outside. Granted, it was February and that is a generally a freezing cold month.
When you visit don't forget to pack: Your mosquito spray in the summer, toque and mitts in the winter.
The best way to get around: car. If you want to go anywhere. If you're just hanging at the mall then feet are perfect.
If I had to describe this city in one word it would be: uhm, cold? At least in the winter. Usually great in the summer though.
I tell my friends to stay at: my house. What sort of friend would I be if I didn't ask you to stay with me? You might be more comfortable in a hotel though. We're a bit crowded here, but always willing to throw the kids into the basement.
The one thing most outsiders don't know about this city is: it's the Murder Capital of Canada. I think there were 37 murders last year, mostly gang related. What? That doesn't make you want to visit?
They say "Virginia is for lovers." So fill in the blank: "Edmonton is for festival lovers." There's a festival most every week in the summer. Tis a good place in the summer, this Edmonton place.

thanks for taking me on this adventure....and nice photos too. And what's that about the american tourists not leaving the mall? Is there a hotel in there too? lol
Great tour, thanks!
What about the deity that is hockey? I am in the minority of Americans who know all about it, due to my hockey husband.
sounds like a lovely place to live!
Beautiful pic! Nice tour, it really makes me want to visit!
37 murders? Edmonton should consider itself lucky! I tried my hardest to find good things to write about Memphis. We had 166 murders last year and Memphis was rated the 2nd most violent city in the U.S.
Hmmm, maybe I should move to Canada!
So you guys overtook Sarnia for the murder capital? Congratulations!
But that mall does look fantastic though!
That's a great tour and I rather fancy a trip to the mall. I am coming to Markham Ontario at the end of June but guess it's too far away to make a visit.
Emma my mail has just arrived and beccy has sent me 3 of your cards. Thank you so very much for thinking of me they are on display on top of my TV and I'm just off to write post on them :-) hugs
Thanks for the info. I basically know zip about Canada, so it's interesting to hear. Especially about the mall...that's a nice perk.
Wow, that's one big mall. If I came to Canada I would want to see more than a shopping mall!
A festival every week sounds good...I could live that kind of life. Don't worry about chucking the children into the basement...I'll kip there!
LBM- The black building towards the bottom is the hotel. It has theme rooms- roman, truck, etc. And they really didn't leave...did the waterpark and the amusement park and a whole lot of shopping.
Lisa-It's called the city of champions because of the Oilers winning 5 cups in the 80s (and one in '90). Oh and the football team won the Grey Cup in there too. Nothing for the Oilers since, not even the playoffs this year, so I sort of forgot about them.
Frannie- It's great if you like snow! We had it for 6 months this winter.
Rachel- When you compare it to American cities, it's definitely not a lot.
Catwoman- Sarnia? Really? I thought it was Winnipeg!
Chris- I have often wondered who you know in Markham, someone comes to my blog from there through your blog.
Emily- It's not a bad perk, but tends to get boring!
Beccy- The festival's are great. I think this year we will try and take advantage of most of them.
This comment has nothing to do with your post....
I just came from ChrisB (and Beccy) - and had to say your cards are absolutely beautiful. You are very crafty (I make cards too - but mine pale in comparison). Very nice.
Being from Virginia, I just have to laugh everytime I hear Virginia is for lovers as that is SO NOT TRUE.
Anyways, looks like a lovely place to live!
1- what is a toque?
2- that mall would FuhREAK me out.
3-how hot does it get in summer? my husband went to Montreal last Feb and froze his arse off under 5 layers of clothing.
I've never been to Edmonton, despite the tempting photos of West Edmonton Mall that reeled me in as a kid. I mean, a rollercoaster in a mall??!! How awesome is that!
(Take comfort in knowing that the older I got, the more I didn't like malls.)
Well you had me interested in a visit till the murder capital of the world part...
emma an ex-colleague who became a friend originally emigrated to Canada after she left school she returned to the uk in 2000 but came back to Canada a couple of years ago, so that's who I'm visiting with Tina (friend I went to Spain with). So I wonder if it's her!
great tour.. I'm on my way!
