Updates

The results from William's CT scab came back fine. His doctor suggested that he quit his job...too much heavy lifting, and he thinks he may have strained his neck which is leading to these headaches. I said "But you've had these headaches since we met." I wanted to say "Quit your job? Are you fucking mad?" Seriously, I am so stressed out financially...we've just had a $700 increase in our rent, so all dreams of buying a house in this city have gone out the window. I really should do a comparison post. Blue Momma sends me pictures of houses where she lives in Alabama and for $200,000 I could have a lovely 4 bedroom brick house. Do you know what $200,000 would get me in Edmonton? A freaking mobile home in Edmonton's "finest mobile home community." And actually, it was $235,000. For a fucking trailer in a trailer park! It's hard to be a poor snob, ya know?

Anyway, he had gone to the doctor because of these intense headaches. He has had them since we met 5 years ago, but they have certainly increased in frequency until they are daily and constant. The doctor put him on medication to treat pre stroke symptoms, and we scheduled a CT. We paid for it ourselves as he does not yet have his health care card, and insurance will not cover something that is covered by the government. We had the all is fine results back before the cheque had even gone through, and for a moment I briefly considered what would happen if I put a stop payment on the cheque but I guess $300 to give him piece of mind is better spent than $300 to find out something actually is wrong.

I did have a phone call from the trustee I emailed, but I was in bed sleeping off the effects of 40 hours of a massive bout of diarrhea, in which I lost almost 3 lbs and slept 6 hours over 2 nights. I will call her back tomorrow. I had also emailed the public school I was looking at for Liam for Grade 7 and the principal called me today and said they would take any student who was looking to come into the school. He is going to forward my email to the special needs co-ordinator. We did discuss that coding is different between the 2 districts and that they actually have 2 programs Liam may qualify for- The Literacy one, as well as one called Opportunity. I'm a little more hesitant about the Opportunity program as some schools combine it with a behaviour program. I really don't need him in a class with students who misbehave constantly. But I'll see what they say- I'd rather have him in that class than in a school on the south side.

I did a lot of web searching today and found a program in Calgary that is based on the book "The Gift of Dyslexia". They say that 80% of the people they teach improve 4 grade levels in just one week. I have called them to find out how much the program is, and while I am sure it is way out of our price range maybe I can take out a loan or something. Sell my first born or whore myself out. Something like that.

I am going to buy that book and read some other books I have on dyslexia (one is currently on my to be read bookcase) and try and remind myself that it really is a gift and not just a disability. I forget sometimes that most dyselexics are actually highly intelligent, and while I tend to think Liam is going to end up working for minimum wage because he can't read the reality is that a great number of dyslexics go on to teach, be engineers or psychologists, accountants and any other number of jobs that require an education. The funny thing is that while we are struggling to have him seen to in elementary and junior high, the LD program for University and college students is apparently amazing. And the lucky boy would qualify for all sort of grants that a regular student would not be considered for. I feel much better about this whole thing now than I have for the last two days.

I wanted to say thanks for all of your comments over the last few days. They really meant a lot. I loves me some free advice and good vibes!

On a final note, I am currently watching Lipstick Jungle and, holy Hannah, has Andrew McCarthy ever aged! Well, I guess Pretty in Pink was over 20 years ago. God, I am getting old.

I'm so glad William's tests came back with good news.

And fantastic news about Liam, at least you have options now! Isn't it amazing how 48 hours can make a dire situation seem so much better? Glad you got the answers you needed and can now figure out what will work best for Liam.

It's so good to hear that you are finding some more options for Liam.

Two good pieces of news! A nice way to start the weekend, hope things keep going uphill!

Glad to hear everything's ok with William! I, too, suffer from daily headaches. I feel his pain. I'm on a beta blocker right now that is alright, not a miracle or anything though.

Also, I have a request post for ya.....There's all kinds of talk about universal healthcare with Clinton running for president and all. Care to tell us what it's like and what you think about it in Canada?

Great news about William, I hope the headaches ease off soon.

It's also good to hear that you have a few options for Liam.

I'm so happy for you guys that William's scan results were good.

Also, I haven't gotten a chance to respond to yesterday's post about Liam and his LD. I really do have things to say...being a former sixth grade teacher who has taught plenty of LD children. I will get to it.

Oh, and seriously...$200,000 would buy a great house here in TN as well. My house only cost $143,000.

Good to hear that William's tests came back with good news. However, it'd be nice if those darn headaches would stop.

That program in Calgary sounds excellent. I hope it's not too expensive.

Glad to hear that things went well with the scan.

Sorry to hear about the rental increase, that bites! Hopefully our soon to be new government can come up with a solution to the ever rising costs of being in Alberta.

Good news on the school front too!!

While I have not watched Lipstick Jungle to see how Andrew McCarthy has aged I do enjoy watching Boston Legal as I think that James Spader has only improved with age. Thoughts?

Have a great weekend!!!

I'm so glad William's scan was clear. It seems you have made some progress with finding out more about the options open to you for Liam.

So, I did catch up in order and read and commented on your last post before coming to this one. I am glad William's test came out fine. I hope the medication helps. I am glad you are making headway for Liam and as I said in the last post, he will succeed.

Please don't ever remind me that Pretty in Pink is over twenty years old again...oh my god, I feel ancient.
I am very glad to hear that the CT came back fine, scary. Nice advice from the doctor, sheesh.

Emma,
My daughter (yes, THAT one - argh) is severely dyslexic. She's also incredibly intelligent (got an A in her first term of physics & is in the top set of maths! she's also a very talented artist & doing exceptionally well in chemistry and biology too).

Anyway, just wanted to let you know I have the book "The Gift of Dyslexia" and it's very good. It opened my eyes up to a completely new way of looking at dyslexia.

It also made me feel more compassion for my [incredibly frustrating] hard-to-teach daughter.

The book will show you a method that will enable your child to see like the rest of the population. Dyslexics don't naturally see things the way the rest of us do.

They also tell you everything you need to know on how to help your child learn to master abstract words that normally confound them when they read.

My daughter used to loathe reading.

She's a total bookworm now.

You can DO THE METHOD ALL BY YOURSELF. You don't have to pay someone to do it. It takes commitment, but it does work. And it's far less frustrating than not doing it.

The materials you need to buy are CHEAP. And it's fairly easy to implement. You just have to make sure you don't do anything for the child --- let them do it by themselves while you supervise and give constructive advice/encouragement.

Note: even if you pay someone to do the method with your son -- you STILL have to do the follow up REGULARLY (daily stuff) so they get their heads round all the abstract words and start waking up particular synapses in their brain.... and that takes time. (for us, about 18mos).

But I have to point out that I found the 'follow up' a hell of a lot LESS frustrating than those HORRID hours I spent with her trying to get her to read with very little to show for it. And the mountains of tears on her part at the end of each homework session were a thing of the past. (we followed the regime religiously for about 18mos)

Also, she thoroughly enjoyed learning the method - & has used techniques from it ever since - to adapt to various situations & cope at school. When she's doing something 'arty'- she floats & doesn't worry about 'going on point'. When she's in academic mode? She automatically goes on point. It's second nature to her for ages now.

She still has trouble w/ writing (to do with short-term and long-term memory problems), but her reading? Is OFF the charts. That girl can read better than most. Something I thought we'd never achieve.
Email me if you have any question;). xo

It helped my daughter tremendously. While her writing skills are no where near her 'age', she is able to do her schooling mainstream without too much hassle.

If you have any questions and want to pick a Mom-of-a-dyslexic-child's brain? You're more than welcome to email me anytime. If you send me your telephone # I can ring you if you'd find it easier to chat about it (we have a calling plan that allows me to ring NA -- so I can talk with my family regularly).

OMG - call ME dyslexic now. I totally didn't edit my post properly.....and I see no way to delete it and start over........hopefully you get the gist;). xo

I'm so glad to hear everything was fine with Williams CT.

Glad to hear there are other options for Liam. It's a good thing to try out those options but the idea that it can bring up reading levels by 4 grades in a week sounds a little off to me. I'm not sure what the program is but who knows.

Wonderful news that William's scan came back negative! What a relief that must be! (J has been scheduled to have a heart monitoring test for over a year now, and he keeps putting it off... brilliant. But keep on smokin', bud.)

As for Liam - it's so nice to hear you focussing on the positive aspects of dyslexia! I'm sure like anyone, dyslexia or not, if you put your mind to it, you can do it... How Tony Robbins am I?

As for rent... everytime we visit my inlaws in Alabama I'm absolutely floored by how cheap it is. They keep saying it's got to be the cheapest place to live in all the US... and surely, it must be. Everytime they come to Toronto, their jaws drop to see the very modest 3-bedroom in a very ordinary neighbourhood that $800-$1-million can buy you. With zero land. It's just crazy.. Especially now since our dollar matches the $USD.

I watched 'Dirty Dancing' yesterday and felt about 100 so I can imagine too with Pretty in Pink flashbacks...
Glad the CT was clean....and that there are other options for Liam too. The free books and getting laid sound good too!!
