Nikki is hosting this weeks Fun Monday and she served up a doozy of one:
We've seen your shelves, peeked inside your cabinets, looked at what your house looks like in both the summer and winter, viewed at some of our handmade pieces and even talked about our best friends. Now it's time we do something. Have you ever had someone out of the goodness of their heart do something for you without anything asked in return? Offered you money when you needed it the most? Helped you change a flat tire in the pouring rain or even just simply held the door open for you when you had your hands full? For Monday, September 10th, we are challenged with doing a good deed. I am not looking for a story of when you have offered your help in the past, I actually want you in the next two weeks to go out and help someone. Go visit a nursing home, cook dinner for someone sick or with a new baby, donate to a charity or even send just a "thinking of you card" to someone who needs it. It doesn't matter what your good deed is, or how great it is. It just needs to help someone!
This one was really hard. And when I first saw it, I said there is no way I can commit a good deed in the next week and a bit. Because, really? That's not the way my boat floats. I may be a nice person (well, Chrisb and Tiger Lamb Girl seem to think so anyway) but I am not really a doer. School volunteering has yet to start, I've not mailed a card for no reason in ages, and although I did have an elderly patient comment on how nice I was all I did was chat with her, so I don't think that qualifies. Oh, and me cooking for someone? Is more a punishment for the both of us than it would be a good deed.
So I almost didn't do this Fun Monday, but then something happened that may not technically qualify but I am going to claim it as my good deed anyway.
Last Monday was Labour Day and I am required to work all holidays. That weekend at work was totally fucked up. The other evening shift person didn't show up on Saturday so the guy working mid day did some overtime. The girl who was supposed to work the evening shift with me on Sunday didn't show up. I was starting to wonder if people had something against working with me. They ended up calling in the guy who is normally supposed to work that shift, who had taken a vacation day.
Monday was a total mess. The girl who hadn't shown up on Sunday came in at 7.30 in the morning, which she wasn't scheduled for. She then misread the schedule and assumed she was to come in at 2.30 that afternoon. She called our very new boss who said okay come in at 2.30. When I arrived at 11 (I was supposed to work at 3.30 but the fella originally scheduled for that shift needed to trade...hey, that was my first good deed!) they told me all this and I said "She's not meant to work at 2.30, A is.") We didn't have a number for her, so left it. She arrives at about 2, and we go over the schedule together. I say to her that if she wants to stay, I will go home if it okay with our boss. Because it would suck for her to travel 45 minutes into work twice only to be sent home twice. That's 3 hours on the road total for 0 pay. And with the way gas is these days! Crazy. She says "Let's see whether A. arrives or not."
2.30 arrives and not only does A arrive, but so does the girl who was supposed to work on Saturday. We called the boss and he said that I could go home so that one of the other two could stay. I think it was fairly nice of me to give up 4 hours of time and a half (As an aside, what is holiday pay where you are? William got double time in Australia, I have a friend who gets triple time on the big holidays- New Year's Eve, Christmas Day; am I totally getting ripped off at time and a half?) but I don't know that it was really a good deed.
But since I was a bitch the rest of the week (PMSing, weren't you dying to know?) it'll have to do.
Head over to Nikki's to see who really performed a good deed this week.

Happy Fun Monday. PMSing or not. *wink*
Hey, that'll do. Especially if you were PMS-ing. I hate PMS.
I think giving up money for someone always signifies a great deed. When I still worked, holidays were double time...but you had to be working a REALLY hot case to justify it. For just straight OT it was time & a half.
Giving up money is definitely a good deed in my book! Especially at time and a half.
I get paid time and a half for overtime, and double time for holidays. Of course, holiday pay is rarely given as attorneys would just rather never pay double!
yeah that was good enough!! What do they want?? lol lol
Sounds like some people need to get their schedule-reading act together, but nice of you all the same!
you did a good one babe..
Not whacking anyone while PMSing is a good deed in my book. And speaking of PMSing...I'm glad it does exist because I wouldn't want this to be my 'real' personality.
I'd say that qualifies! You gave up money, girl!!
It works in my book. Hopefully your having a better week this week!
I think it was a good deed, you could have dug your heels in and insisted on working but you thought of others.
I'd say giving up money is absolutely a good deed! I don't know too many people who would have done that. Good Fun Monday post Emma!
yep it works specially while pmsing
Giving up money is certainly a good deed.
And hubby only gets time and a half on holidays if he takes the time out of their holiday/vacation/sick pool.
Should we just move to Australia?
I think someone should give the Boss a "Good deed" and teach him to figure out the schedule a bit better.
Happy Fun Monday! Even if it wasn't so much fun.
I was thinking along the same lines as Karmyn! I'm not sure I would have been so kind if I'd been in your shoes!
I think that definitely qualifies!
a) Talking to that elderly patient was a good deed.
b) We can get triple time on public holidays.
c) You work with some real dorkchops.
LOL WT said dorkchop!! That is funny right there!
I agree that giving up time and a half is a good deed as is talking to an elderly patient.
Does that mean giving WT comments everyday counts as a good deed? boo ha haha ha!!
I also think being a rep at the play school counts too! :)
do these people even know how to read? maybe teaching them how to read could be your next good deed! :)
Hey good deeds are even better when you get to go home as well!
Holiday pay for me has always been time and a half also....I may have been gettting ripped off though, who knows.
a complicated good deed as well.
Nurses not being able to read their schedule is a little bit scary - hey?
of course it was a good deed! :)
Sheesh - no overtime for Labor Day here.
But sounds like you went above and beyond to make all that work out to everyone's advantage, so LOTS of credit to you for your deeds!
