I've been absent from Fun Monday for a few weeks, but I could not resist this week's edtion, hosted by Willowtree, who requests this:
"Tell us about your best friend. Particularly things like: where you first met, how long you've been friends and why you think you are best friends"
I have a hard time with the word "best". I feel as though it has been years since I had a best friend, that when my school days ended so did the world of best friends. I am not a person with a lot of friends, probably because of my overwhelming shyness, and I would say I have many more acquaintances than friends. One thing I do notice is that the friends I do have tend to be very outgoing. The majority of my friends could talk to absolutely anyone and have a decent conversation, whereas I really struggle to find a single thing to talk about. Opposites attract, I guess.
My closest friend is Shelley, who quite often gets mentioned in my blog. She is Saoirse's godmother, and a nurse in the ICN at the hospital where I work. I didn't meet her at work though. I met her almost 8 years ago when Taylor was in 4 year old playschool with her youngest son Jeremy. I liked her right away, she was very friendly and outgoing. I don't think we became friends until closer to the end of the school year though. We used to talk about books, at the time I was working at Chapters, and we are both big readers. I lent her a pile of books and a lasting friendship was born.
So what can I tell you about Shelley? She is married to a great guy, Ed, and has 2 boys. She has 2 dogs and 2 cats. She has white carpet. WHITE. And you'd never guess that 4 animals and 2 teenage boys spend their days and nights in that house. Her house is so clean. And her boys, they do chores. She has many, many friends, many of whom she would call a "best" friend. Her friendships mean a lot to her. She is the one who arranges our twice yearly girls weekend away to the mountains that about 20 or so people attend. She has been a great friend to me. She is a fantastic godmother to Saoirse and "auntie" to Sophie. Normally, I am not keen on calling people you are not related to auntie, but she really is like a close relative to my girls. If something happened to me, I wouldn't doubt that she would remain a vital part of my girls lives.
Here is an example of how good a friend Shelley is: she has seen me in all my (non)glory. Oh yes, she was there during my labour with Saoirse. She was meant to be photographing the birth but then the c-section got in the way. There are not many people in this world I would let see my vajayjay but apparently she is one of them.
I could go on and on about her, but it is 12.30 in the morning and my thoughts are no longer coherent. I wanted to get this up now, as William is hope this week and will cast an evil eye on my blogging all day long tomorrow. I'll try and make this post a bit better if I get the chance.
I had to take a photo of this picture of Shelley and I that hangs on my wall. It is the only photo I have of just the two of us. I hate having my picture taken, due to my fat cow status, and Shelley is usually behind the camera. I do have a fantastic picture of her with her bra hanging on the wall behind her, I should post that one tomorrow. Anyways, when Shelley was a teenager she did this program called Katimavik, where you live in 3 different regions of Canada for 3 months each. The program celebrated it's 25th anniversary in 2002 and Shelley invited me to go down to Calgary with her for it. It was a great time, and to thank me for coming she gave me this friends frame with our picture taken that weekend.
Note 1: If you live in Canada and have children between 17-21, or approaching 17, you should seriously considering having your child be a part of Katimavik. It is amazing. I can not wait until Taylor and Liam are old enough for it.
Note 2 (and absolutely nothing to do with this post): It looks as though William might be heading back to Australia for a few weeks this autumn. The police have decided there was insufficient evidence to proceed with his abuse case against the doctor he had as a teenager, but the medical board will still go ahead with their case. So he needs to go testify. They would prefer to do it that way, but say they can also do it via video. William would prefer to do it in person, so tomorrow I have to call Immigration and see if he can leave the country prior to his permanent residency going through. The cost of it all has me freaked out, but I understand why he needs to do it like this. Blah to bad doctors is all I can say.

You know, the more I read this Fun Monday's posts, the more I realise that having a best friend is a bit like finding your perfect partner, it's a real lottery that not everyone wins.
What a great friend you have there Emma, she sounds very special.
I hope William is allowed to go to Australia.
I tend to by shy at times and found some of my friends are loud and out going. I have become that way at times. Glad you have a great friend. :)
emma I understand about shyness I have to make a huge effort when I meet people I don't know that well- it certainly helps to have some extrovert friends. Your friend Shelly sounds like a really good friend.
Now I need to know, which of the women in the picture is you and which is shelley?
That program sounds amazing!
I cannot imagine the cost of flying to Australia. Ugh!
Sounds to me like you've got a great friend in Shelley. I have a such a hard time picturing you as shy even though you've said it before.
Oh yeah, and, Shelley has a great friend in you too!
Shelly has white carpets along with kids and critters....yep, she's an alien!!! (just being silly)
It sounds as though you are a good match. You both get what you need from each other.
Just a minute. I was still blinking from reading about the white carpets. Wow she's amazing just for that! Sounds like you found a great friend. You're both very lucky.
I agree with WT on this one..you have one the lottery if you have found a good friend.
God bless Shelley.
What a wonderful friendship you guys share!
"Friends are the family we choose."
Happy Monday!
What a great story of a lovely friendship! I have off white carpets 3 boys 2 cats and 2 dogs... how does she do it?! It is impossible for me!
Great post Emma - a tribute to Shelley! :-)
Shelley does sound like a grand friend. I hope that the deal with your husband works out for the best.
Great post :)
I can just imagine the prices to go to Australia.. I know how much it is to fly to Canada from England and that is ridiculous!!
Anyone who has seen my most private parts must be either my best friend or my worst enemy! Oh wait, or my wife :)
What a great story...
Friends are hard to come by, and even harder to keep. You two have a great relationship.
And good luck with the case.
what comment got deleted? can you tell?
Emma I can totally understand what you mean by being extremely shy. I am the same way which is one reason my job is so difficult and stressful for me. Its funny though because I've had people say to me when I say that like you do who can't see it. I think the fact it is on a computer screen and not actually seeing a face makes it easier.
Sounds like Shelly is a great friend you are lucky to have her. I have friends who are much more outgoing then me usually also it is strange.
I hope things work out the best for William wether he goes back or not and if he goes I will pray things will work out financially so it is not to much of a burden on your family.
good luck to William!!!
White carpet???? Eegad. It would be grey in weeks at my house. :)
Sounds like a great friend.
I hope everything goes well for William.
