Stephen Harper and Gay Rights

Towards the end of the election campaign Stephen Harper said that having a free vote on the gay marriage issue was not at the top of the priority list, that there were many other issues to be taken care of.

Yesterday, it was said that he will open talks on this issue. The first big announcement. Gay marriage. Nothing about health care, child care, education or military spending. But gay marriage.

Do we not have bigger fish to fry in this country?

What's next? Women lose the right to vote?

Didn't I say we would be taking a step back? I think I did.

I thought someone asked a question about gay marriage and where it was on the agenda and that's why it was in the news. Given the strong opposition (NDP, Lib,Bloc) to reversing the decision re gay marriage, there is a good chance Harper would lose -- assuming he is opposed to gay marriage. I believe his main position has been that he wishes to have a free vote. I believe he feels that this and similar moral issues are matters of conscience and should be determined by free vote, rather than party policy. So, when he says he will have the vote "sooner rather than later" that means he intends to get it off his plate before the next election. I don't see anything problematical about that.

Awfully quick they get to that, eh? Gotta get things done while they're up there.
