Burgh Baby is hosting a bit of Christmas Crazy and while I do love all things Christmasy I have neither the money nor the space to go all out. A post from 2 days ago shows you a bit of my decorating and though I did not take pictures of Christmas towels I assure you tha they are in all 3 bathrooms. I am surprised by the amount of people who don't put Christmas towels in their bathroom.
Today I am posting, totally without permission and stolen off of facebook, pictures of William's mother's house in Melbourne. I said myself in that same post from 2 days ago that I didn't fully feel the Christmas spirit until the snow arrived and I just don't know how Australians do it. Not only is there no snow, it's the middle of bloody summer! It's unnatural is what it is. Imagine trying to cook a turkey dinner in 40 degree heat. Do they even play Let It Snow on the radio there?
My MIL, a very kind and lovely woman, is a wee bit fond of knickknacks. When the shelves in the 2 pictures below are not full of snowmen, Santas and other assorted Christmasy decorations (minus, I note, the fun filled Hallmark snowman we sent her a few years ago) they are full of pictures and other assorted garage sale knickknacks. Now I'm a pretty cluttered person myself, but her shelves make my eyes hurt.
A white tree. My SIL sent her this tree all the way from Scotland as she couldn't find one in Australia. No offense to any white tree lovers out there, but I hate and despise them with all of my being. My mother shocked me this year by buying a white tree. I was appalled and called her all sorts of grinch like names. Have I said my mother and I are very different? Her white tree is themed in red and silver, while I buy into the theory that your tree reflects your life story with ornaments that are loved and have a tale behind them. Anyway, back to the MIL...They do have a regular normal green tree as well, in the sunroom, but I could only steal so many pictures.
Deer in the garden in the back yard.
The front of the house.
The inside of the carport.
Carport roof.
I am not sure how much decorating the average Australian home does, but I am told that people do stop and get out of their cars to take pictures. But, for me, it just doesn't look right without snow.

That is one helluva set of decorations! I too am not convinced by the white tree - just seems a little wrong.
The white tree is just tacky, tacky, tack-eee. All wrong. As is Christmas without snow. But nevertheless, I could do it. Easily.
I'm just going to be restrained and say that's just slightly over the top. Slightly.
(AHHHH!!!!)
I think the carport is my favorite. Amazing. Where does she keep all that stuff the rest of the year?
I think Santa threw up on her house. I don't understand doing the big outside decorations in Australia either... and I'm Australian. Makes no sense to have all those lights and stuff up because it gets dark far too late for anyone to really appreciate them.
Christmas in winter would seem very wrong to me, it is a summer thing. Heat, sweat, gift wrap everywhere, children eating watermelon in the back yard and seeing who can spit the seeds the furtherest. That to me is Christmas.
And the white tree - so wrong! It should be pink
That is spectacular!
We can NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER let my husband meet your MIL! LOL! They would conive together and figure out how to decorate every surface between Texas and Australia!
Merry Christmas Crazy!
C-r-a-z-y! Women :) This is my wife's business, I am usually trying to get lost, while she is decorating home for Christmas. My only duty is lights outside, I like to do that, but nothing else.
But I have to admit the front of your house looks amazing! :)
Marry Christmas!

Oh my gosh...Christmas overload!!!!
Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!!
What a collection. And what happened to the Hallmark snowman, then?
Kel
Good lord!
Hey, did you get your ornament yet from the swap? Can you let me know?

WOW. That is really decorating. I have decorated my house but not to that extreme. I guess if it makes her happy, then let it be.
And I thought my mother was the queen of Santa collectors. Your MIL has her beat!
I did a double take when I opened your blog - we must have similar taste as I've used this skin on my gardening blog (http://lighteningsgarden.blogspot.com). :)
Anyway, on to Christmas. Most Australians aren't silly enough to have a hot meal on Christmas Day (although my mother is talking about it this year). Our traditional fare is cold turkey, cold ham etc with lots of different salads. And often cold prawns. Or a BBQ. We do all kinds of different things.
And the lights? We love driving around looking at them. They're not as popular as they were about a decade ago but there are still some good spots to go.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
I have a lot of snowman in my house during the holidays but not quite everywhere like hers ... AND I put Christmas towels in the bathrooms !! Merry Christmas.
Holly cow! That must take her weeks to decorate!
You'll have quite an inheritance;)
you may never talk to me again....'cos I don't do Christmas towels..... That is some Christmas stash...do you know she actually received the snowman you sent her?
wow--- that is a lot of knick-knacks!
That is a lot of knick-knacks!
I am in the states, the south to be exact, and there is no snow here either. Hubby said the last time it snowed was years ago, but it is very uncommon. I was raised in the North so I know all about wishing for a white Christmas and having that Christmas feeling once snow comes. I think once you live in a place with little to no snow at Christmas you get used to it and it becomes natural. It was 75 degrees here last week and I would much rather have that. :)
OMG, that is way over the top. Can you imagine to time to put it all up and take it down! That's in Australia you say?
We've not had a white Christmas here in VA in YEARS ourselves. *sigh* That's the south for you.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
Uhhhh. Wow. That makes my eyes hurt, too. Yikes.
That is a lot of knick-knacks. I have one shelf's worth in my entire house.
We have a lighted white tree--it's outside, and white because it's buried in snow!
Merry Christmas!
Hold me. I am scared...
Aussies are all very different. From my experience we are more about the decorating inside rather than out. Flying our freak flag quietly away from the neighbours so to speak.
I like my ornaments but I don't have this many. We do see a lot houses illuminated over the Christmas period, in our cold climate it does look warm and inviting. Sorry to your MIL, but I would never have a white tree!
Oh wow....wow, wow, wow....that's about all I can saw about William's mom's house. Where in daylights does she store all that junk when it's not the holiday season???
As for white Christmas trees...I'm not a fan either and never have been....HOWEVER, I am thinking about trying to find a small white tree for Lila's room next year. Her room is decorated in pink, green, and white, so I thought it'd be cute to get her a little white tree and decorate it with pink and green ornaments....kind of like this, except white: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7qcEdrbXpSI/ST_8ntetxFI/AAAAAAAAGSo/4dSlJdBkdXs/s1600-h/IMG_7262.JPG
