She's growing up

Tonight Taylor and I went to a focus program (International Baccalaureate, sports academies) night at the junior high she wants to go to. 2 weeks ago we went to another local junior high and she was not at all impressed by it. I'm not sure why, I think she is just so focused on the other school she didn't consider any other options. I was sort of glad, because to me this school was just too big. I like small.

She will be attending my former junior high. It is amazing what 21 years can do to a school. When I finished Grade 9 the school was heading into "bad reputation" territory. It was really bad about 10 years ago, and even in the news due to a knife related crime. 5 years ago they brought in the IB program and then the sports academies and the school seems to have turned around.

There was IB at my high school, which of course I never did. Bad grades, you know? The middle years programme is a bit different in that you don't need to have a certain average to get in. They have to maintain a 70% in all their core subjects, which shouldn't be an issue for Taylor as long as she doesn't get too lazy. What I like about IB is that they are required to do 20 hours of community service per school year, as well as complete a personal project. She has to take French and music, both subjects that she would choose to do in a regular program. That leaves her with 3 other options to do, one per term. I have said she should take 30 minute meals so that she can make us dinner but for some reason she isn't so keen on that. Drama, Art and Appetizers and Snacks are I think what she wants to take. We will see.

Because her current school is a feeder school for this junior high, they will be going and spending the morning on Thursday. They will meet the teachers, visit classes and have lunch. She is desperately hoping that her friend Ashley will change her mind and decide not to go to a different junior high. She is very nervous about not having friends in her class. I have to keep reminding her that she has to be that girl that turns around and says hello to the kid behind her. (Number 12 on my youyou.) Haven't seen her in years, but I will forever remember her turning around and saying hello and how fucking very grateful I was. I told Taylor the story of that girl and how we remained friends through junior high, that even though we went to different high schools we stayed friends, were friends when she stalked some guy from the university radio station and friends when she ended up in a psychiatric hospital after said radio guy rejected her and she sliced her arms up, friends while she lost 100 pounds and I gained it (a slight over exaggeration) and friends through pregnancies, crappy boyfriends and unhappy marriages. I said it's amazing what can happen when you turn around and say hello.

She said "I'm shy." So not true.

She will be fine. She will.

Me? I'm not so sure. I don't think I'm going to enjoy being the mother of a junior high student.

And just a thought for you all...by the time Sophie finishes Grade 12 I will have been the mother of school aged children for 27 years. If I'm not dead by then.

Emma you are lucky they can pick which junior high schools they go to. We have to send them to the school in our district, no choice. The only choice they get for classes is one and Izzak choice choir. It does feel weird to have a middle schooler though. I really didn't like the thought when I found out he would be going to middle school for 6th grade when we moved here. I still don't like it very much.

It used to be that you had to go to the elementary school in your area, but they opened the borders a number of years ago. All the schools are now offering different programs to attract students. One thing that bothers me is that learning disabled programming is in only a few schools, so Liam is bussed to another school. I argued with my school district about it, but didn't win!

That sounds like a fantastic school and what choices: 30 minute meals and Appetizers and Snacks you certainly don't get those choices here.

None of Dillon's friends went to his secondary school but he's made new ones and kept in touch with some of the old ones so he has the best of both worlds!

I think I would have enjoyed middle school waaaay more if I had choices like that. Maybe it wouldn't have been the worst and most awkward time in my life. Just maybe.

Beccy...that's a plus to this school over the other. Home ec (as I called it back in the day, now it's food and fashion is divided up into courses, so if you like sewing but hate cooking you can just do the sewing. Their is a course for Canadian Heritage foods, of which I thought there were none. Nothing makes me think Canada.

Good luck with School .. Middle is in grade 7 .. with the Catholic school system in ontario you go directly to high school after grade 8 .. (9-12) .. she has now changed her mind from attending a very good arts school, to be set on going to a average school because her girl friends are going there. We will see.

Ok that last tidbit about 27 ...just had me HOWL with laughter.

Kyle started school preschool in 1997. By the time Casey graduates from high school..in 2024? Holy shit..27 years.

Not funny Emma.

Emily...I think I would have hated junior high and high school mo matter what my options were!

AC...do you have to pay monthly fees for Catholic school? I have heard we are the only province in which Catholic education is fully funded. I know that a friend in BC paid $200 a month. In which case my kids would have went to public school.

BEG...it's a bit of a frightening thought isn't it? I hate the thought of years more homework.

I really wish we could choose which schools our kids go to over here. Unfortunately it is all dependant upon where you live. It scares me to think of my innocent 6 year old going to some of these schools. Recently at an elementary school here, which has grades k-probably 4th or 5th, a student told her teacher she was going to have a gang member kill her!!!! It's super scary! And very sad.

That last part made me laugh too! And I can't believe the selection of home ec courses either! Amazing!

I would think that the Canadian cooking class would include lots of maple syrup. And tourtiere (a meat pie, a Quebec specialty) or poutine (fries, cheese and gravy, also a Quebec specialty). Oh wait, you're in Alberta where they hate Quebec.

So I guess that leaves you with maple syrup! ;-)

Forgive my American-ness, but by "IB," to what are you referring? Is that like a gifted children's program?

Boliath said...

Thanks for asking Eric, I was wondering too, in my world IB is usually followed by an S :c)

And - I thought you were joking about the food classes, those are for real?

Wow, schools in Canada are very different from Ireland circa 1974-87.

also wondering what IB is...

You can only pick your school here, if you pay. Which we will probably do with our children. The one we like is over 10K a year. for one kid. for pre-K.

Hehe...don't think you're going to enjoy mothering a junior high kid huh? I teach junior high, as I'm sure you knew already, and I must say that most parents don't seem to enjoy those years too much. It's probably b/c the kids are going through a VERY self centered age; it's all about ME for a good three or four years. At least you're prepared :).

Long time, no news, hope all is ok.

And where are you sweetie?

Your public awaits...
