I didn't get my ashes today, the first time in years. It's the only Catholic-ish thing I do. Aside from sending my kids to Catholic schools, of course. I'm feeling a little guilty about it, a feeling I was not expecting.
So I guess I better give something up for Lent. 40 days of not having what?
I usually try and give up the same thing that I use in my New Years Resolution (broken on New Years Day every year, without fail) and that is yelling at my kids. The older ones. I know you are supposed to give up something you enjoy, and believe me, there are moments when I enjoy yelling at the two of them. Anyways, it's good for my lungs.
But I should give up something that I really, really, really love.
I think it's going to be chocolate (especially Mr. Big, which is just yelling at you to gain weight by its very name) and pop. I'm aiming high with two things and hoping to shed a few pounds of chocolately, poppy fat.
I'm taking bets. How long do you think I'll last? There may be prizes involved here. I'm doing good so far, and its only been 10 hours. I turned down the offer of a chcolate bar from William today and didn't have any coke with my dinner.
By the way, I'm in this all alone, Taylor is still thinking about it in the hopes that I will forget, Liam is refusing and William says he doesn't have to do it due to the fact that he is not of my religious persuasion. But don't let that have you thinking I won't last 40 days. I might last 4, I might last 40. We will see.
And what did you give up?

So what did you give up for Lent?

Hey I like the excuse that yelling at the kids is good for your lungs. I will have to remember that. Geez I feel like I have been doing a lot of that lately and since Kelly is leaving for awhile soon I am sure it won't get a whole lot better.
Oh and I am not Catholic so I didn't have to give anything up!
I always give up the same thing my friend does to support her, since I'm not Catholic. So, I will wait to hear from her what we are giving up. I'll let you know.
I'm still thinking. How awful is that?
THIS is the sole reason I'm not Catholic. I mean, GOSH give something up for religious reasons? Especially when it's encouraged to do something to torture you like no chocolate is just WRONG! ;)
Truthfully though good luck! I actually think it's a marvelous part of the Catholic religion and quite symbolic and interesting and a fabulous lesson for ANYONE. I've considered utilizing it as a test of strength. But without religious backing, eh...I have no reason to do it and give up instantly (hell WITH religious backing I'd give up quick because I suck like that.)
I vote you make it the whole 40! I'll give you all kinds of cheerleading! If you DO make it the whole 40? I'll faint and perhaps bow to you because DUDE what a task when you're talking those two items!
I'm curious...have you ever completed a Lent task? What's the best you've done? Worst you done? Who knew that your comments are a place to maul you with questions? Hey! I'm curious!
not catholic. not religious at all. but i'm always trying to give up junk food. and i always seem to fail... oh well.
btw, great advice given, and i wish it were that easy, but i know these boys. nick will have no part in letting out how much of an ass he is. and alex will never tell nick what to do. so i'll be stuck feeling like a shitty girl friend forever... or until i get the guts to tell her and ruin a few friendships along the way..... le sigh...
You lucky non Catholics!
M, I can't remember if I gave up sugar in my tea as a resolution or for Lent. Either way, it's the only one I have ever stuck with for both occassions. I have been sugar free for 20 years. That would be in my tea only of course.
Generally I try and give up junk food. It never works, however I am hpoing the thousands of extra pounds currently hanging on to my meant to be skinny self are finally bothering me enough to make me last this out.
Go for the full 40 days....I'm sure you can do it!!!! Good luck.
I thought about giving something up for Lent but my appetite is so here there ands everywhere with the bloomin' hormones at the moment I'd fail within a week. I have a Lent course book somewhere, I may try and take that up rather than give something up.
As another non catholic I am giving up...diddly squat (nothing)!
As a child us prods (protestants) use to give up something like chocolate and no it never lasted. Not sure why we gave it up and we were never told to but it made us feel good trying.
Emma much as I love you, you remind me a bit of me so maybe it's my lack of faith in me but I'll give you five days, six hours and 47 minutes!
I hope you prove me very wrong!!!
I'm Jewish. All we have to do is one full day of fasting to atone for our sins. Sorry...!
However, I'd say it'd be MUCH easier to give up pop than chocolate... Personally, I can't live without it. But mine is more a family size Cadbury Fruit & Nut Bar a day... it's becoming a problem...
I'm Baptist. We don't give up anything except the right to be silent!
I'm not catholic enough to do the whole giving up thing. Although it is kind of ironic that I'm kind of choosing to give up on my marriage on lent...
Wow, Emma, you sure have a lot of non-Catholic readers (me being one.) I don't give up anything, just get entertained by the people who do!
As far as pop and chocolate, the pop is much easier, I did it last year for the calories (although I think I eat the difference now, hmmm.) I think you can go a few weeks with the chocolate, but don't forget, it has antioxidents!
Gave up giving up for lent long ago as I only ever lasted a few days at the most. I do think it would be a good idea to give up choc but then again I've broken it already as I got tempted earlier when I did shopping before having lunch. Fatal mistake and the only reason I actually bought a bar of choc was because I was a pound short of gaining 300 bonus points and needed to make up the money. sucker that I am!!
Like William, I'm not Catholic, so I didn't give anything up, not that I haven't thought about it. I think you will do just fine. Just remember when the temptation comes why you're giving it up for 40 days! I wish you lotsa luck!
Someone was talking about giving something up for lent the other day. I asked if they were Catholic and they said no, but you don't have to be Catholic to participate. I was all like, "really? maybe I'll do it." But I kinda forgot about it. Maybe next year!
Good Luck!! I completely forgot about Lent and have just realised I actuall have no idea what date Easter day falls on this year - how awful am I?!
i wss going to give up chocolate.... but i broke down at 3:30! isn't that pathetic? that is the time my kids get home.... is there a connection?
I actually choose to take on more indulgent habits. There. Take that.
Agnostic! Ha ha!
Would it be impolite to say... a week? Week and a half? At least as long as it takes to read this. ^_-
