In July I signed up to participate in a blogging tribute to the victims of 9/11. Of course, being me, I left it to the very last moment before I typed a thing, although I had read about Marie Pappalardo, of whose name I randomly received.
Marie was 53 (but going on 33 according to her daughter) and had lived in Paramount, California for 12 years where she was a Controller and Production Manager for ALA Foods.
Marie was returning to California on Flight 175, the plane that hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center. She had been on her annual trip to her home state of Massachusetts to visit her daughter, Maria, for Maria’s birthday as well as to attend the Feast of the Three Saints, celebrated on Labour Day at her home church, The Holy Rosary in Lawrence.
After Marie’s death her co-worker Steve Santoyo revealed that he and Marie had been married for 2 years, and that she was step mother to his three daughters. Their marriage was kept private because of their jobs.
Marie’s interests included travel, racehorses (she loved the horse Affirmed, a Triple Crown winner), all sorts of music, operas and animals, especially cats. She would take stray cats to the vets for shots and spaying. She even cut a hole into her garage door to allow cats to come in to eat. She had two cats of her own, Mickey and Mouse.
Marie Pappalardo is survived by her daughter and son in law, Maria and Lance Koutny, her husband Steve Santayo, her three stepdaughters; Rebecca, Erica and Amber as well as two brothers.

She sounded like such a lovely person.. today is such a sad day!
A moment of silence for her and all the others who died today.
Wonderful Tribute!
Thank you.
These are heartbreaking stories and difficult to read....
I am honored to be a part of this project.
Mine is posted also...
The 2996 link is down. I have a new link on my site to view the participants.
Bless you...
Very nice tribute.
She looks 33 :)
Thank you for sharing her life with us and putting a face on a name.
She will be remembered more for who she was than how she died.
It was a difficult thing to do. Thanks for stopping by my blog and for your kind comment. I like how you shared about Marie's love of cats. Can you imagine being secretly married, and it only coming out after your untimely death? You think you have all the time in the world, and then, nothing. It sends chills up my spine.
Emma. Marie was not married. This is a false story that an unscroupulous writer at the Boston Herald published without verifying the truth in the days after 9-11. That said, thank you for the kind rememberance of Marie. It helps her family to know that others care. If the writer of this blog wants more info please email at Lbkoutny@aol.com P.S. I would appreciate it if you would remove the reference to her being married to Steve as it just perpetuates the false statement. I have been unable to get the big tribute sites to do this! I am not very blog knowledgable but did figure out how to leave a comment.
